Bien Nacido Syrah

Hailing entirely from the older section of Block Z planted in 1995, and always containing a small portion of Viognier for co-fermentation, our Syrah is classic Bien Nacido. Planted in an East-West row orientation, the summer sun flies high above, and evenly ripens our Syrah. Because Block Z is located high above the valley floor, its only protection from the strong off-shore winds is the famous White Rock. The wind slows ripening, and even in the warmest vintages, we will still be harvesting and fermenting our Syrah late into October. The co-fermentation of Viognier lends a softer and more floral tone, which makes the Estate Syrah a perfect wine to open early in its life. Fresh violets cracked white pepper and blueberry pie dominate with a fresh herbs-de-Provence note found in the background. Those who give the wine some time in bottle are rewarded with summer sausage and sweet leather. Fermentation always happens naturally, and we never fine or filter. The amount of Viognier varies depending on vintage, but generally around 2-4%. We age the wines for 18 months in 10% new French oak.
