Bien Nacido Grenache

Only made a few times since our inception, the Grenache is the smallest cuvée we make. In most vintages, only two barrels are produced, equal to 56 cases. To honor the style of the noted 100% Grenache producers of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region of France, like Rayas, Charvin and Chapelle Saint Theodoric, our Grenache is always aged in neutral French Oak with a high portion of whole clusters. We aim to harvest at the perfect ripeness, where our cool Eastern facing block of Grenache can evoke the candied red fruits the grape is known for while highlighting the herbal and savory elements that are purely Bien Nacido Vineyard.

Los Osos clay loam and Franciscan shale over marine volcanics

Chosen from one of the cooler and more exposed sections in our vineyard, the Grenache comes to us from BLOCK 39C, and is entirely Alban Clone Grenache which ripens evenly every year. Aged in neutral barrel, the stylistic inspiration comes from the 100% Grenache wines of the Southern Rhône valley in France. With herbal inflections of rosemary, garrigue and sagebrush all surrounded with a sweet, penetrating raspberry preserve, cherry, lavender pastille, and spice cake flavors show impressive depth as well as vivacity. Only enough fruit comes from this block to make around 60 cases per year.
