A Legacy Rooted in the Land
A Family of Winegrowers

The Miller Family’s story is one of generations shaped by the land, guided by an enduring commitment to agriculture, and defined by the belief that exceptional vineyards begin long before the first vine is planted.
Our California farming and ranching heritage dates to 1871, when William and Francis Broome journeyed from England to the West Coast, establishing their roots in the fertile agricultural lands of Southern Ventura County. Their dedication to the land became a family legacy, passed down through generations to William Broome’s granddaughter, Elizabeth. Following her marriage to Robert Miller in 1942, the Miller Family assumed stewardship of the family’s agricultural enterprise, carrying forward a tradition of hard work, thoughtful cultivation, and respect for the land.
In 1969, brothers Bob and Steve Miller acquired what would become Bien Nacido Vineyard, united by an ambitious vision: to establish a vineyard that would one day be recognized among the finest in the world. What followed was four years of determination, hands-on labor, and unwavering belief in the potential of the land. In 1973, their vision took root with the planting of the original 300 acres of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the Santa Maria Valley.
That same year, the family expanded its agricultural vision to the Paso Robles highlands, developing a 1,400-acre vineyard named French Camp in honor of the Basque shepherds who once inhabited the region. Drawn to its remarkable elevation, mineral-rich soils, and dramatic diurnal temperature shifts, the Millers recognized a distinctive landscape with the potential to produce wines of exceptional character.
Over the decades, the Miller Family’s commitment to thoughtful vineyard development and long-term stewardship has helped establish Bien Nacido as one of California’s most distinguished vineyard sites and a coveted source of cool-climate Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Its reputation extends well beyond California, earning recognition among the world’s celebrated vineyard-designated estates.
Yet Bien Nacido’s distinction is not defined by the land alone. It is the result of a remarkable convergence of place, generations of agricultural knowledge, and the dedicated people who tend the vineyard with precision and care. From the original plantings to each new vintage, the Miller Family’s philosophy remains unchanged: respect the character of the land, cultivate its potential, and allow the vineyard to speak for itself.
More than a vineyard, Bien Nacido is the expression of a family legacy—rooted in the soil, refined through generations, and carried forward with every harvest.
